Dentists normally offer Veneers for one of two reasons
1. To improve the smile visually
2. To Protect the tooth’s surface from damage.
A veneer is a thin layer of material which is placed over the tooth. They are normally made of porcelain.
Porcelain veneers are more durable and less likely to stain than veneers made of composite.
Veneers were invented in the late 1930s by a California dentist named Charles Pincus. During Pincus’ time, the veneers were held on by only denture adhesive making them useful for temporarily changing the appearance of an actor’s teeth.
The reasons for using veneers are as diverse as our patients.
Some people have small teeth in their mouths and these smaller teeth leave gaps and spaces that are often difficult to fix with mere orthodontics.
Other people have teeth positioned awkwardly making their teeth look crooked.
Most often people have worn away the edges of their teeth giving the teeth an aged appearance.
Multiple veneers can close these spaces, lengthen teeth shortened by wear, fill the space between teeth caused by gum recession, provide uniform coloration, and improve the overall shape and symmetry of the teeth so that they appear straight.
Veneers can be permanent and non-permanent, depending upon the patients’ needs and particular mouth structure.
Non-permanent veneers are removable and reusable, but the permanent versions of veneers are often favored by patients. The permanent veneers normally take little preparation of the tooth’s surface.
After a proper fitting veneer is constructed, it is then bonded to the tooth’s surface with durable adhesive agents.
Our patients will be smiling for years to come with veneers, considering that with today’s improved bonding agents veneers typically last 10 to 30 years, depending on care and wear.
Of course, a veneer may have to be replaced over time due to damage, discoloration, or gum line shrinkage.
Whether you need a single veneer to restore a worn tooth, or multiple veneers to create a movie star smile, Dr. Blum and his caring staff are eager to help you achieve your desired smile!
